Cafe Roux

ABOUT

Bheki is from Durban, a graduate of the street and Hartford University - and inspired at home by the likes of Phillip Tabane, Sandile Shange, Allen Khwela, Abdullah Ibrahim and Winston Ngozi, the forerunners in Afrocentric Jazz and Zulu-style guitar.

Bheki has played with bands like Sakhile, African Jazz Pioneers and Soul Jazzmen - and accompanied the Golden Divas (Dorothy Masuku, Thandie Classen, Abigail Kubheka, Sophy Mgcina and Dolly Rathebe). It was here that Bheki honed his arranging skills and formed part the rhythm section of legendary figures like Mike Makhamele, Barney Rachabane, Duke Makasi, Jonas Gwangwa, Bruce Cassidy, Thembi Mtshali, Dr Tu Nokwe, Dr Gcina Mhlophe (Story teller and songwriter), Hugh Masekela, Mbongeni Ngema, Mara Louw, Sbongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman, Suthukazi Arosi, Phinda Mtya, Oliver Mtukuzi - the list is endless!

With all his experience he has carved out a very unique concept which touches upon different genres - at some point it's been referred to as Maskandi/Jazz for it's Zulu roots, Bheki is comfortable with African Jazz because he doesn't shun away from improvisation.

At the forthcoming concert he will be presenting repertoire from his three albums; Getting to Heaven Alive, Songs of Life, Asambe and his rendition of some African classics.

This music is a 'healer to all who hear it' !
