ABOUT
We are delighted to invite you to Ilitha Labantu's 5th Annual High Tea Fundraiser, a special occasion marking both the significant 35th anniversary of our founding and the continued support of our Dorothy Zihlangu Shelter.
Join us for an afternoon of reflection, celebration, and commitment to our mission, as we continue to make strides toward a safer, more equitable future for the women we serve. Your presence and support can make a significant difference in this heartfelt cause.
Our guest will enjoy a delicious high tea comprised of traditional and contemporary eats while being inspired by guest speaker and an opportunity to interaction and networking.
Dorothy Nomazotsho Zihlangu, born in 1920 in Dyamala Village, Eastern Cape, moved to Cape Town in 1939 but became a domestic worker due to financial constraints. In 1941, she was relocated to Langa and joined the ANC and ANC Women's League. She participated in the 1952 Defiance Campaign, helped form the Federation of South African Women, and organized the Freedom Charter Campaign. She took part in the 1956 women's march against pass laws and was detained for six months in 1960 while pregnant. Despite being banned, she co-founded the United Women's Organisation, served as Vice-Chairperson, and remained active in anti-apartheid movements, even going underground during the 1980s State of Emergency.
All proceeds will go to the Ilitha Labantu Transitional House for Survivors of Abuse
which was donated by Femina Magazine, and named after Mam Dorothy Zihlangu
