"Indoda - The Man" seeks to provoke critical thought and dialogue about the nature of power and its representation. By examining the interplay between iconic figures and the societal forces they embody, we hope to illuminate the complexities of authority and resistance in our world. Through the lens of Julius Malema and other iconic representations, we invite you to explore the enduring struggle for power and the relentless quest for justice.

This exhibition features a diverse array of artworks that engage with the theme of "The Man" through the lens of iconography and the figure of Malema. Paintings, sculptures, installations, and multimedia pieces invite viewers to reflect on the following themes:

Join Lawrence Lemaoana (artist & curator), Vusi Mbulali (artist) and Sara Hallatt (curator) as they reflect on the ways these multimedia pieces explore themes such as, the construction of power, resistance and subversion, identity, representation.

Born in Johannesburg in 1982, Lawrence Lemoana lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Lawrence Lemaoana critically engages with mass media in present-day South Africa. Seeing the relationship between media and the ‘people’ as inherently problematic, he identifies and repurposes existing control apparatuses using his trademark cynicism. Lemaoana’s embroidered works are emblazoned with appropriated political dictums woven in kanga fabric – a material with its own complex ancestry. Here, Lemaoana wages criticism on the agency of local media, and its ability to shape social consciousness: the result turns didactic and propagandistic tools on their head.
