ABOUT

Ka'Makaté is a new musical project created by transdisciplinary artist, musician and filmmaker Kamil Adam Hassim, who is known for his innovative work at the intersections of Art and Science. Kamil is the youngest artist globally to be awarded a residency at the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the first and only artist to have conducted a residency at every Major Astronomical Observatory in South Africa - where he collaborated with scientists and engineers at the Southern African Large Telescope.

This project involves musical concepts and experiments which began as compositions at CERN and the array of telescopes in the Karoo Desert. This sonic tapestry weaves a connection between the influences of particle physics, astronomy, cosmic sciences and indigenous, spiritual knowledge systems. The performance also debuts a special unique musical instrument designed and created by the artist.

Presented as an oeuvre en devenir the music exists like humanity - in a state of becoming, rather than a finished, static product. The Quintet of some of Cape Town's most talented musicians explores the cosmic nature of music and the mystical applications of sound through composition and improvisation.

Going beyond the terrestrial realm, this event promises to transport and transform listeners through an intimate sonic offering that seeks to cultivate community and the pursuit of deeper truths.

The stellar Quintet forming Ka'Makaté consists of:

Kamil Adam Hassim: Guitar, Sutra

Lilavan Gangen: Tabla, Ghatam, percussion

Danel Dippenaar: Flute, Tenor Saxophone

Adam Powell: Piano

Zwide Ndwandwe: Bass
