L2L PRACTICE WALK 1: 8 SEP 2024: FERNKLOOF (22km) "Hop-on-Hop-Off"

ABOUT

Anyone can participate in the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse practice walks - family and friends | male or female | fit children or fit adults.

The routes chosen for the practice walks help registered Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies prepare for the Official 4-day 100km Walk. Proceeds from these walks will be used by Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies to support duly elected charities in the Overstrand.

FERNKLOOF is the first practice walks in the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse calendar. The benefit of this walk is that it allows for easy access (and escapes) to and from rest points.

• Route: Gateway Shopping Centre – Contour path – Fernkloof Reserve (no Dogs allowed)– Grotto Beach – Hermanus coastal path – Gateway Shopping Centre
• Distance: 22km
• Duration: approx. 6-7 hours
• Terrain: Fynbos Bush Track, Tar Roads & Coastal path
• Rest stops: Fernkloof Nature Reserve & Grotto Beach - Hop off spots. Please arrange own transport back.
• Meeting point: The Beanery Coffee Shop at Gateway Shopping Centre, Hermanus
• Time: 6h30 – Registration | 7h00 – Start | 14:00 – approx. finish
• Theme: Spring / Flowers - dress up optional

What to wear and pack for a practice walk:

• Each walker needs to wear comfortable active wear with a light-weight all-weather jacket for wet / windy / cold conditions.
• Your shoes need to be walked-in training shoes, with a sturdy sole to protect your feet against hard pebbles and shale. The training shoes should not be too tight, to accommodate sweat absorbent seamless socks. This prevents blisters from forming. Be aware that training/hiking shoes with mesh uppers tend to let sand in which creates friction between the shoe and sock. This can lead to irritation of the skin and blisters. It is recommended to wear gaiters around the ankles to prevent sand from getting into the shoe.
• Sun protection is essential, as the southern Cape weather can be very unpredictable, turning from early morning mist to sweltering hot sun in a matter of hours. Sun screen, a sun hat and re-applying the high factor sun screen throughout the walk is necessary to prevent sun burn and heat exhaustion.
• Each walker should carry a daypack, a comfortable size carry bag which can accommodate the following:
• 1 - 2 litres of drinking water (bottles or water bladder)
• Energy snacks and a light lunch
• A light sarong/ wrap to sit on during breaks
• First Aid essentials such as plasters, antiseptic cream, re-hydrate tablets and personal medication

About:

Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies is a non-profit organisation (NPO169-860) that raises funds for charities in the Overstrand.

Money is raised by mobilising the fundraising efforts of the committed, generous and fit ladies who walk the 4-day 100km walk from the lighthouse at L’Agulhas (southern most tip of Africa) to Danger Point Lighthouse in Gansbaai. Funds are raised through the Official L2L Walk, the Practice Walks and the Wednesday Walks.

Since its inception in 2006, L2L has raised over R8.8million and supported more than 30 different charities in the Overstrand.

Money cannot be raised without the support of our walkers – albeit the registered Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies or family or friends or community members. Your small contribution will make a big difference to the communities impacted by the charities we support in the Overstrand.
