ABOUT

Join us for our monthly Deck Takeover ft. Carinus Family Vinyard Wines

Carinus Family Vineyards is a collaboration between two friends and distant relatives, Danie and Hugo Carinus. Inspired by the soil and sustained by a passion for artisanal winemaking, this union showcases the best cultivars that the South African Winelands has to offer. The fresh wines express the terroir where the vineyards are rooted and are made using a refined winemaking process to honour and celebrate the cultivars with minimal interference.

Treasuring traditions passed down through generations whilst embracing new adventures, Carinus Family Vineyards is a vino venture rooted in five generations of vineyard cultivation.

Danie and Hugo are sixth generation wine grape growers with well-established vineyards in the Swartland, as well as Devon Valley and Polkadraai in Stellenbosch. The two friends – and distant relatives – began making wine in 2011. This was how Carinus Family Vineyards began.

Danie is from Bluegum Grove, located in Polkadraai, Stellenbosch. With its unique, coarsely grained granite soils, Polkadraai has emerged in recent years as an esteemed grape-growing area that has both connoisseurs and critics very excited.

Hugo is from Fransmanskraal and Dwars-in-die-Weg in Stellenbosch. He is also responsible for farming Rooidraai Farm, outside Malmesbury in the Swartland. Rooidraai, with its iron-rich granitic soil and excellent water-holding capacity, is also where it all started for Hugo and Danie in 2011, when they made their first Chenin Blanc wine.

After growing and selling their grapes to established wine producers for several years, Danie and Hugo eventually began crafting their own. Three Chenin Blanc wines are made. Two are from a 42-year-old dry-farmed vineyard outside Malmesbury, (one of the few vineyards retained by the family when they acquired the Rooidraai property in the Swartland in the 1980’s) and the other from Bluegum Grove farm in the Polkadraai Heuwels of Stellenbosch.

Our Polkadraai Heuwels Chenin Blanc and Carinus Syrah vineyards are found in the Polkadraai region of Stellenbosch; an area with a glowing – and growing – reputation for these two varieties.

Danie and Hugo maintain a pragmatic approach. They farm with future generations in mind, with a continuous focus on establishing new vineyard plantings. In keeping with the times and embracing sustainability, the farms have diversified over time, embracing a variety of crops and innovative farming techniques.

They also believe that the vines they plant today, will be the old vines for the next generations of Carinus vignerons and winemakers to tend to.
