ABOUT

The symposium guided by the Nguni proverb Belele nje, Abathulunga (“They may be asleep but they are not quiet / Hulle slaap dalk, maar hulle is nie stil nie”) explores the conceptions of geological time in the spirit of holding space. Working with soil as an archive that holds stories from their past, present and future. evoking - Rematriation / Inheritance / Ecological grief as love.


These thoughtful discussions between artists, scientists and cultural practitioners will encourage leaders in their respective fields to think, create and debate together the important dynamics effecting our shared world.


The symposium aims to foster a more compassionate relationship with the environment, encouraging attendees to reflect on the ways our connection to the land can inspire both emotional and intellectual growth which can drive meaningful change.


The Hazendal Festival | Soil Edition Symposium, hosted by Lungi Morrison, presents two days of inspiring discussions featuring a variety of expert panels. Each day brings together thought leaders who will explore our relationship with the land and environment from diverse perspectives.


Friday, 4 October

Speakers include Mark Swilling, Tapiwa Guzha, Senzeni Marasela, Christian L’Homme, Stephanie Conradie, and Kafui Anwoor, sharing their insights on key environmental topics.


Saturday, 5 October

Dr. Uhuru Phalafale, Dr. Erick Gbodossou, Faye Kabalikagwa, Prof. Kenese S. Mossanda, Abri de Swart, Li Tsoanelo Zwane, and Prof. Simeon Materechera will lead discussions, offering their unique viewpoints on the issues at hand.
