Tree Walk (September 2024)

Sun Sep 22, 08:30 - Sun Sep 22, 11:30

The Sheds, Crocodile River Reserve

ABOUT

Two events and two experts all rolled into one walk on Sunday the 22nd of September!

The Tree Walk & Talk

Did you know some trees need a male and female tree to ensure the continued existence of their species? The female will produce the fruit and seed while the male will produce the pollen. These trees are called dioecious as opposed to a monoecious tree which has male and female flowers on one tree.

Cheryl Dehning, chairperson of the Tree Society of South Africa has decades of experience with trees and has managed to enthrall people every year at the CRR Tree Walk & Talk with her knowledge of these invaluable plants that give us everything from shade, oxygen and food to wood, paper, and medicine. Learn how to identify the different trees, get advice on what trees to grow in your gardens at home, learn lots of fascinating facts, see our own dioecious Karee trees, and get your questions answered, all on a lovely leisurely walk through the beautiful bush and Egoli Granite Grasslands of the CRR.

The Southern Bioblitz

This year’s Tree Walk is particularly special because it coincides with iNaturalist’s Southern Bioblitz. Cheryl also has a vast knowledge of our wildflowers, and in addition to the trees, we will be looking for flowers to record on the iNaturalist app. This app helps collect data for various scientific repositories for use by scientists and organizations to help conserve biodiversity globally. An expert from GDARDE will also be joining us to help gather as many observations as possible and will also share their expert knowledge.

Join us for double the fun on Sunday the 22nd of September. We will be meeting at The Sheds, Gemstone Road, Crocodile River Reserve at 8h30 and finish at 11h30, and at R95.00 per adult and R45.00 per child, 12 and under, the whole family can join in.
