ABOUT

PJ Powers, also known as Thandeka, is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed South African singer, songwriter and activist and latterly an author, releasing her memoir in the UK in 2025.

Her career began as the lead singer of Hotline in the 1980s, and she performed huge hits that included 'Jabulani', 'Feel So Strong' and 'Home to Africa'. Her music came to the attention of the international music scene and she toured throughout Europe with the late 'Zulu Blanc' Johnny Clegg.

Her solo career flourished throughout the 1990s and 2000s and she shared the stage with stars like Eric Clapton, Annie Lennox and Hugh Masekela. After the release of Nelson Mandela in 1994, South Africa embarked on a journey of reconciliation with itself and the world, which included the hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 1995. Nelson Mandela requested that PJ Powers should sing the iconic song, 'World In Union' with Ladysmith Black Mambazo at the opening and closing ceremonies.

PJ is still politically active and cares deeply about the country that has given her so much. She has been honoured with many awards over the last 30 years and, among other things, was privileged to write and perform the official 85th birthday song for President Mandela in 2003, which she sang to him in front of world leaders and presidents during the international broadcast.

PJ Powers continues to entertain huge audiences across Africa and has performed in the United Kingdom annually since 2021. She is soon to release a new single and video called, 'I'm Coming Home' with Mzansi Youth Choir, the Golden Buzzer winners of America's Got Talent.
