ABOUT
Western Province Figure Skating will be welcoming skaters from all over the country when it hosts the first interprovincial competition of the season: The Cape Interprovincial Figure Skating Championships 2024, more commonly known as CIP.
CIP will feature the country’s best skaters in figure skating, ice dance and synchronized skating. The Western Province team, however, will be missing the “tip of its spear” with all of its Junior and Senior champions either out of action or overseas training and competing. This opens the door for Gauteng’s skaters to impose their presence and perhaps steal the overall honours the Cape team has held onto for so long.
This doesn’t mean that Western Province will be a walkover for its neighbours from the Highveld. In a show of its depth of talent, WP are still able to field a very strong team consisting of several reigning national champions including: Alexia Easom (Juvenile), Rachael Rodd (Basic Novice) and Team Velocity (Mixed Age Synchro). Besides these reigning champions, Western Province also proudly fields Keva Emond (Senior), Hayley-Rae Thomson (Junior), Maria Navarro Brito (Junior), Teagan Botha (Junior), Felicity Chase (Junior Dance) and Shan Tong Yu (Junior Dance) - to name but a few - who are sure to fly the flag high for Western Province.
CIP will also feature a full Division B field, with skaters participating in all three disciplines, namely figure skating, ice dance and synchronized skating. In fact, it will be the first time that Cape Town’s current Bronze Synchro team will compete at an interprovincial competition. This will be a big challenge for the team, but Western Province is confident that they will do themselves proud.
