Singalong Folk Club Revisited!

Sun Oct 13, 16:00 - Sun Oct 13, 18:00

The Novalis Ubuntu Institute, Wynberg

ABOUT

Join us to experience a slice of Cape Town's cultural history of protest music during the turbulent 1980s!

Who is the Singalong Folk Club?

We were a group of mainly University of the Western Cape (UWC) and Pentech students who in 1980-1981 established and ran the Singalong Folk Club. The monthly performances of the Folk club were hosted in the upper Cygnet Hall of the old Swanie's Inn in Bellville South.

We are looking to have a reunion of the musicians and having a first performance to trial a programme with a view to developing a more expanded event.

It is also our intention to record and memorialise the story of this club as part of the cultural and anti-apartheid protest history of Cape Town.

The programme will be about 2 hours long, including an interval. It will cover many of the original mainly protest songs which various members of the folk club composed or adapted, as well as well known songs.

The main part of the programme will be the songs of the late Co-founder member, Jean Benjamin (Jean Swanson) as a tribute to her. These songs will be performed by amongst others, Belinda (Bell) Jackson.
