ABOUT
Sonic liberation across Alkebulan! (Double bill)
Mthimkhulu Stuurman, a South African-based Trombonist, brings a unique approach to African Spiritual Jazz, honed over three years of experience in the art form. His journey was profoundly influenced by the late legend, Jazz trumpeter Dr Johnny Mekoa, who first introduced him to Jazz music. More recently, he has found inspiration in the music of the great SA trombonist Malcolm Jiyane.
Returning to the stage after the recording of the ensemble’s debut album "Imithandazo Yethu” (Our Prayers), the Umuthiomkhulu Ensemble consists of:
Umuthiomkhulu - Trombone & Vocal
Conor Hugo - Electric Guitar
Vuyo Nkasawe - Keyboard
Timothy Fortes - Drums & Cymbals
Adam Selikowitz - Bass
Gabriel Sieff - Cello
Operation Khataza, a dynamic eight-piece band led by the enigmatic Farrah Khataza, a mystical
character brought to life by singer/songwriter, guitarist, and selector Sanele Blaai. The band's
unique sound is a captivating blend of Afro-futurist nostalgia, drawing influences from a rich
tapestry of genres such as Zamrock, South African jazz, kwaito, soukous, highlife, R&B, blues,
and rock & roll. Farrah Khataza's music transcends boundaries, delivering a profound and soul-
stirring experience.
“Sonic Liberation Across Alkebulan” is Operation Khataza’s core message and ethos. When the Operation performs, it is always under this banner and in this vein. This war cry asserts that true liberation for Alkebulan (a pre-colonial indigenous name for the continent of Africa) and all its inhabitants is attainable when armed with the weapon of music. Music and the word transcend all social and political boundaries. The Operation’s very existence attests to this. With a purpose is to stir and to wake, to cause chaos, and to create community through music.
Sanele Blaai - lead vocals and rhythm guitar

Mariana Del Carmen - vocals
Fabian Arries Selote - Poet
Conor Hugo - guitar
