ABOUT

Jazz Umcimbi -  Umcimbi is a Xhosa word for describing a traditional ceremony, specifically here for Xhosa people. This work is positioned as an exploration of Xhosa music (umombelo and amagwijo) and South African jazz in a dialogue. South African jazz functions as a solemn space from which cultural sonorities enunciate. This work unfolds as an invention that engages music as a point of reference for locating histories and identities of the Xhosa, and by extension, Nguni people .
