ABOUT
Abstract at August House brings together work by August House artists who work with various points of abstraction. Often abstract art is easily criticised for being inaccessible to those without an art education because there is no recognisable subject matter, the significance of the work is assumed to be tied to knowing where it came from or who made it. But a clear subject, or a recognisable figure are not the only things that make recognition possible; do we not recognise colour, shapes, texture, marks made through gesture? When we consider an artwork as more than an object bearing a reference to meaning, but an experience, we can open ourselves to the idea that impulse, and emotions have been clearly captured in these works.
Join Bekezela Mabena, Melissa Haiden and Msizi Mkhondo for a panel discussion on their work and abstraction, facilitated by Sara Hallatt at August House.
