ABOUT
We have a historic moment on our hands, securing Jazz in the native yards as a culture that has survived hardships through the decades, through jazz, specifically the home-brew type of Marabi, Mbaqanga peppered with American-style jazz. This music culture has produced talents of Bhut'Tete Dr. Mbambisa, Abdullah Ibrahim, Chris Columbus 'Bra' Ngcukana and others. They are the fountain that the likes of Andile Yenana drew inspiration from. The jazz in the native yards will be secured through succession in the Tete Mbambisa Sextet. The Sextet has many performances to cover and records to reproduce, Andile Yenana is poised to succeed Tete Mbambisa on the Sextet. Not only had Andile performed with Tete Mbambisa but also come from what we call ' umnombo womngqungqo wesiNtu ' - the African Jazz Legacy
We are introducing this idea through a 3 part concert on the 24th November at 16onLerotholi Art Gallery, Langa, 15h00 with AndileYenana’s Quintet ( 1st set ) opening for the Tete Mbambisa Sextet ( 2 set ) , then a 20 min hybrid to end the afternoon with Andile Yenana performing some Tete’s compositions with the Sextet.
