ABOUT

The Pringle Proms announces a musical journey and lunch with Bruce Copley on Saturday, January 25.

Reawaken the musician within as multi-instrumentalist Dr Bruce Copley shares ten musical facts about the unique acorn cupule and plays various notes and mimics well-known birds such as the Piet-my-vrou. He will showcase the 1.5 octave-note range of the fully chromatic, tiny yet robust, acorn. He calls this “Oakay music”.

The Pringle Proms is proud to present Dr Bruce Copley on Saturday, January 25 at 12 noon.

And, in a move away from typical musical instruments where often endangered trees are sacrificed to create them, the discovery that the oak naturally creates thousands of its own perfect, fully chromatic musical instruments, is a win for nature too.

In a two-and-a-half hour session with a buffet lunch served in between, host Brian Berkman will lead a Compelling Conversation with Bruce Copley towards a journey of discovery that connects us in a profound way.

A former University Professor of Human Movement Science, Dr Copley is an internationally acclaimed holistic educator who has inspired tens of thousands of people to rediscover their lost love of learning. He has spent the past 40 years engrossed in education. The first 19 years in formal academic education at five universities. During this time he was awarded multiple degrees, received the prestigious British Association Medal for Exceptional Scientific Research and was Professor and Head of Sports Science at Wits University in Johannesburg.

He brings a fresh and profound approach to holism, grounded in his own awakened awareness.

“After seeing the 1989 film about teacher John Keating - Dead Poets Society, I realised I was not yet living my passion despite an acclaimed career,” he says of his plan to leave the safety of collegial life at Wits to develop what he calls “edutainment”.

“I pioneered corporate drumming in South Africa”, he recounts, “and ways to use sound and action to communicate the value of the kinds of interpersonal skills today we know we need in business.”

More than three decades later, Dr Copley is providing transformational experiences that are uplifting people. “I bring my more than 50 years as a professional communicator, teacher and facilitator into crafting an experience or collection of experiences that will succeed in leaving a memorable impression, communicating key messages at a deeply felt level, and facilitating a fun yet profound activity,” he says.

Dr Copley has a particular passion for fire and sound - an expert in creating and teaching groups how to make the first, primal fire with friction sticks, and also a multi-disciplined instrumentalist, his skill is in sculpting soundscapes to further entrench a deeper understanding of life.

“Although I play 118 musical instruments, I came to music relatively late in my life. I am most interested in the kinds of instruments that easily evoke emotion such as certain drums because of our primal connection to beat, and the Australian didgeridoo which has a history of between two and four millennia and is still widely played.

Bruce will also offer a musical gift and demonstrate making the primal fire.

A buffet lunch will be served. Please bring your own wines and special beverages.
