We’re heading to one of the most stunning – and lesser-known – gems in Karkloof: Grey Mare’s Tail Falls!
This is where magic lives… It’s like hiking in an enchanted forest!
Standing under the falls is always an unforgettable experience, but here’s the special twist: the waterfall shifts 10 meters along the cliff, so even those trying to avoid the splash can’t escape the magic! The falls continuously move from side to side, just like the tail of a horse – that’s how it got its name.
From the grasslands above, the stream plunges 101 meters over the dolerite cliffs into the misty forest below. This is a sight you don’t want to miss!
Meet Time: 7:45am for 8:00am at Shawswood Farm, Karkloof

What to bring:
• Hiking boots/shoes (no flat shoes!)
• Water or cold drinks (minimum 1.5L per person!)
• A backpack to carry your essentials
• A walking stick is a must! There are 4 small river crossings, so bring a small towel or rock shoes for wet feet.
Please note: Hiking all the way to the base of the falls involves serious rock scrambling, and those rocks can be slippery. It is not recommended for beginners, so be prepared for a bit of a challenge!
Hike Details:
• Distance: Approx. 6km (return)
• Difficulty: Grade 2 (some rock scrambling required near the base of the falls, but otherwise, a fairly easy walk)
• Duration: Approx. 3 hours
Well-behaved dogs are welcome on this adventure!
Tickets are limited! Booking strictly via Quicket.
Rain or Shine: This event goes ahead unless extreme weather conditions arise (extreme heat/cold, hail, or heavy rain). A little rain won’t hurt anyone – and the bugs will stay away! So pack a raincoat, just in case!
Please note: We need a minimum of 15 confirmed bookings to go ahead. If this number isn’t reached, the event will be canceled and refunds processed.

After the hike, we’ll have breakfast and a picnic at Shawswood Farm – bring your blanket, chairs, snacks, and drinks, and enjoy the day with us!
Grading of Hikes:
• Grade 1: Easy. Minimal fitness required
• Grade 2: Not too strenuous. Moderate fitness
• Grade 3: Moderate. Physical fitness advisable
• Grade 4: Strenuous. Physical fitness essential
• Grade 5: Very strenuous – high level of fitness essential
