ABOUT

Nestled between mountain, beach and vlei, Muizenberg’s village is a haven of charm and tranquility. Its architectural fabric, dating mainly between 1900 and 1940, is remarkably intact – a result of its relative neglect for almost half a century, and investment in its regeneration at a time when Muizenberg was deeply unfashionable. Palmer Road was once the business centre of Muizenberg, and residents and visitors had a choice of where to buy their groceries, have shoes repaired, furniture upholstered, and even a milliner to provide the latest fashions in hats.

But the village has other surprising connections – to the whaling industry, the delivery of airmail in South Africa, the suffragette movement, and even to boere musiek!

Explore its architecture and personalities in a walking tour led by Brett McDougall.

Meet at 09h45 at the Surfers Walk of Fame circle on Beach Road (just outside Hans and Lloyd). The tour, starting at 10h00, will take approximately 90 minutes. Wear good shoes, a hat and sunscreen.
