ABOUT
Pringle Proms hosts an explosive conversation about South Africa’s nuclear programme.
Pringle Bay’s Lydia von Wielligh-Steyn, who co-authored The Bomb, a definitive and factual account of South Africa’s nuclear programme, will be the guest at Pringle Proms on Saturday, May 3, at 12 noon.
The Pringle Proms’ Brian Berkman will prepare a buffet lunch and lead a compelling conversation with Lydia von Wielligh-Steyn to explore South Africa's nuclear programme with details of nuclear tests, espionage as well as the smuggling of nuclear materials - and swords that eventually became ploughshares.
South Africa's bomb kept the world guessing for years. Six-and-a-half nuclear bombs had been secretly built and destroyed, former South African President F.W. de Klerk announced in 1993. No other country has ever voluntarily destroyed its nuclear arsenal.
From 1975 Nic von Wielligh, Lydia's father, was involved in the production of nuclear weapons material, the dismantling of the nuclear weapons and the provision of evidence of South Africa's bona fides to the international community. The final report on the history of the nuclear programme he compiled for the International Atomic Energy Agency was deemed to be the most comprehensive and professional the agency had ever received. In the book, The Bomb, Nic and Lydia provide a gripping account of ground-breaking research, uranium enrichment, the arms race and South Africa's secret programme.
Tickets are R350 per person and include an arrival cocktail, a buffet lunch with wine and coffee or tea with dessert.
