ABOUT
Come and celebrate the release of Gary Rathbone’s album – 'Where We End is Where We Begin' - at the iconic café Roux in Noordhoek on Thursday 8 May!
Born in Durban in the early 1960s, Gary Rathbone has been making music ever since he was old enough to pick up his parents’ tennis rackets to play air guitar to The Beatles. After moving to Johannesburg in the 1980s, Gary became a fixture on the burgeoning alternative music scene as a member of several notable bands including What Colours?, The Aeroplanes, and The Spectres, co-writing The Spectres’ break-out classic ‘Teddy Bear’, which topped the South African music charts for 13 weeks in 1988.
A multi-instrumentalist, writer and producer, Gary has continued to write and record in the years since the demise of The Spectres and collaborated with various South African musicians including award-winning composer and performer Neill Solomon and indie icon Jim Neversink. Apart from the track he co-wrote and performed with Neill Solomon in the late 1990s, ‘The Sun Shines Down on Christmas Day’, very little of his material has been available on general release until his formal solo debut EP, ‘Fly’, in 2019. In 2022, Gary formed folk-rock duo The Weathervanes with Nechama Brodie, releasing their debut EP ‘At Home’ in November 2023.
A successful career in television production and sports media management has seen Gary travel the world, living in Nigeria, Kenya and the United Kingdom before returning to South Africa in 2018, where he headed SABC Sports until resigning the position in late 2022. Gary is now the director of African sports media company Sportscape Media.
‘Despite all the other things I’ve done in my life,’ Gary says, ‘I’ve always only been a songwriter’.
