ABOUT
The Lamentations of Jeremiah
Emilio de Cavalieri (c. 1550-1602)
Cavalieri’s Lamentations of Jeremiah, written towards the end of his life, is one of the most groundbreaking and expressive pieces of sacred music from the late 16th century. These texts, appropriate for Holy Week and specifically Maundy Thursday contain strong emotions and is set to equally compelling music: For the first time in the history of religious music, Cavalieri used the stile rappresentativo or dramatic monody. Cavalieri employs diversity in every possible aspect, including quick alternations between soloist and ensemble, unexpected leaps of tonality and affect, and composes a work of extraordinary dramatic force and poignancy.
Lutesong Consort is proud to present the South African premiere of this work, which is as historically significant as it is beautiful.
With Elsabé Richter, Vasti Zeeman-Knoesen, Lente Louw, Willem Bester, Keaton Manwaring (singers), John Coulter (harpsichord, organ), Uwe Grosser (lutes) and Colleen Oxtoby (Viola da gamba).
