ABOUT

Dr. Bev Ditsie Retrospective: A Queer Feminist Lens on 40 Years of TV & Film

Bev Ditsie’s journey in television and film began in 1980 when, at just nine years old, they became South Africa’s first Black androgynous child star—an act of quiet defiance in conservative, apartheid-era media. Over the past four decades, Bev has forged a groundbreaking career as a filmmaker, director, and activist, seamlessly blending art with advocacy.

Conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by Claremont Graduate University in 2019, Dr. Ditsie has left an indelible mark on the audiovisual world, directing music videos, reality TV, and documentaries that amplify marginalized voices. Yet, despite 40 years in the industry, their legacy is often framed solely through their queer feminist activism, with little recognition of how that activism has shaped their work in media.

This retrospective will explore the depth and impact of Bev’s career through a curated selection of films, videos, and television projects.

This retrospective is not just a look back—it’s a celebration of the intersection of art and activism, and a testament to a legacy that continues to inspire. (See Bev’s full bio here)

The TV and film retrospective will be moderated by the incomparable South African poet, playwright, recording artist, actress, tv personality, and activist who has spent over two decades reshaping the cultural landscape, Lebogang Mashile. (See Lebogang’s full bio here)

Another MAJOR treat! Nico Phooko will be joining us on the night and doing a LIVE painting of the retrospective. Nico is one of Africa’s most gifted visual artists who has embraced and popularised the unique concept of live painting, through which he captures the essence of special events live on canvas as it happens. He has been involved locally and abroad in private solo and various group exhibitions since 2009. (See Nico's bio here)

This retrospective is not just a look back—it’s a celebration of the intersection of art and activism, and a testament to a legacy that continues to inspire.
