ABOUT

Conducted by Leon Starker, the 32 voice Cape Town Camerata performs a selection of songs that includes some of those that made them outright winners of the World Choral Grand Prix held in Spain in October last year. The Cape Town Children's Choir will open the concert, conducted by Bronwen Leith.

The Cape Town Camerata, formerly the Cape Town Youth Choir, has evolved into a premier 32-voice a capella ensemble based in the heart of the city centre, aiming to spark joy for both singers and their audiences. Their repertoire spans sacred and classical pieces to vibrant African music, showcasing their versatility and commitment to delivering moving musical experiences.

The choir was recently crowned as the Grand Prix winners at the “World Choral Grand Prix” in Spain in October 2024 – an achievement that the choir is very proud to add to their list of accolades. Some of the choir's other recent accolades include: Best Performance of a contemporary work and the Publikumspreis at the ICCC in Spittal an der Drau (2019), Grand Prix Competition winners at the International Choir Festival in Karpenissi, Greece (2019) and placing in second place in the mixed voice category at the 2022 Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition.

The Cape Town Children’s Choir is a distinguished regional children’s choir that offers music education and performance opportunities to talented children aged 10 to 16 from diverse backgrounds across the Cape Town metropolitan area, South Africa.

Founded in January 2020, the choir is under the direction of Bronwen Leith (Choir Director and Conductor), with Penny Middelkoop serving as Rehearsal Assistant and Accompanist. As a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC), the choir is based at Beau Soleil Music Centre in the suburb of Kenilworth and typically consists of around forty-five choristers.
