ABOUT
NOVEMBER 17, 2017 – CAPE TOWN INNOVATION TOUR
Cape Town has been recognized globally as an emerging global entrepreneurial hub, due to it’s vibrant startup community and innovative spirit. The greater Cape Town area is home to many accelerator programs, co-working spaces and global tech businesses, serving markets across the continent and globe.
This tour aims to give you a great introduction to the ecosystem, access to the entrepreneurs and leaders building the sector, and you’ll spend the day being hosted by industry experts who are embedded in the community.
The first business the tour will visit is Zoona, which provides essential financial services to customers in Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi. Since inception, Zoona has processed over $2 billion in transactions and been recognised by the Nike Foundation and the Unreasonable Group as one of the top ten start-ups best positioned to take girls out of poverty by helping them become entrepreneurs.
The next stop on the Innovation Tour is at the Woodstock Exchange, home to the oldest startup incubator on the continent, the Bandwidth Barn. We will also visit the Barclays Rise fintech co-working and accelerator space, the newly launched Injini Edtech accelerator as well as the Meltwater Entrepreneurship School of Technology in Cape Town.
After a packed lunch, the next stop will be at RLabs in Athlone on the Cape Flats. RLabs, founded in Cape Town in 2008, believes that through empowerment and transformation, individuals can find hope, training and economic opportunities. RLabs has impacted over 9.2 million people globally, has a presence in over 23 countries and has won a number of awards for social impact.
From RLabs, we will continue to Spier, one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms in Stellenbosch where we will meet up with the XL Africa startup teams. Here you will have a chance to reflect on the week, as well as enjoy a wine and chocolate pairing, surrounded by historic buildings, a sustainable farm and old oak trees before we head back to the city at five o’clock. The bus will return to the Waterfront by six o’clock (perhaps a bit earlier depending on the traffic).
