With the passing of the festive season signaling the end of 2018, and surviving the odyssey that is January, Roots Up in partnership with Red Bull Music and hosted at S43 Home of That Brewing, calls on all fun-believers to join us in our first mass-celebration of 2019, presents the fourth edition Sunday School.
After a truly blessed year that included featured performances from some of the country’s hottest acts such as Darkie Fiction, Card on Spokes, Easy Freak and DJ Maramza. Sunday School IV looks to christen the year with acts the likes of MUZI, Victoria Raw, Jaedon Daniel, CostaBesta, Jazteq and Captain Cleo.
Headlining the evening is KZN’s very own MUZI. Hailing from Richards Bay, MUZI needs no introduction, having had a meteoric rise over the last three years. His journey has seen him collaborating with the likes of Stormzy, performing in England, Scotland and Italy with slots at Rocking the Daisies, OppiKoppi, Afropunk and more. This is not to mention his successful 2018 release Afrovision. His unique blend of Afrobeat and electronic music, and energetic performance have made the Zulu Skywalker one of the country’s most sought-after acts, creating a set you truly wouldn’t want to miss.
Building upon one of the best years for Durban’s burgeoning musicians and DJs, Sunday School IV features some of the city’s best performers. Having spent the year performing at shows and festivals across KZN, soul and RnB songstress Victoria Raw makes her first appearance on the Sunday School stage. Having cut her teeth as member of the dynamic hip-hop & jazz band the Blvck Crystals, Victoria is no stranger to Durban audience. Joining her on the bill is Blvck Crystals founder Jaedon Daniels. Daniels has been one of the cities most desired young session musicians, having played with Durban’s premier jazz artists and contemporary acts like Kyle Deutsch, Bylwansta, and Easy Freak. His recent release, Hold the Game, is a project that encompasses his influence and history with the perfect blend of Hip-Hop, Jazz and Electronic music. Sunday School will also see the return of Durban’s prodigal rapper CostaBesta. Last appearing on the tack Coast off Durban’s own Missu’s EP An Education, Costa has spent the year performing across Toronto while immersing himself in the city’s art, fashion and cultural scene. Sunday School will sees CostaBesta’s return to performances on South African soil.
Spirits will be maintained throughout the night with performances from Jazteq and Captain Cleo. Jazteq, a disciple of the loops and samples, spent the last couple of years crafting his beats while bringing Durban his blend of all things rap. His direct influences are linked to the likes of Madlib, J-Dilla and the Notorious BIG. Captain Cleo is one of Durban’s most unique DJs and designers. CC has spent the year making dance floors thump with her unique selection and style, having rocked audiences at parties like Pussy Party (DBN), Same Sex Saturday and First Thursday. She doesn’t DJ genres, she DJs vibes.
