Rootspring is honored to present locally framed legend Odwa Bongo and incredible percussion duo Ronan Skillen and Fredrik Gille (Sweden). Two acts! Two sets! Come join the intimate experience.
ODWA BONGO:
A young and expressive legend in the African Music scene. Odwa Bongo is a singer and song writer who draws inspiration from a plethora of genres such as African, Classical and Jazz. Expect to hear experimental, soul-feeding sounds rooted in Africa. Having had his early music training at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School and winning numerous awards, he then went on to the best music institution in Africa, the South African College of Music (UCT), where he graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Music with a focus in African Music. He has worked and collaborated with the undisputed queen of bow music and African song stress, Madosini, Xhopera pioneer, Mthwakazi, Freshly Ground lead-singer Zolani Mahola and the renowned Simphiwe Dana.
RONAN SKILLEN:
Ronan Skillen (SA/Ireland) is inspired by the aesthetic of record label ECM, and music from Mali to Memphis and Mumbai. His flair for improvisation began with the didgeridoo, and his later schooling in Indian classical music and wide palette of textural percussive sounds combine to create a rich soundscape, incorporating tabla and hybrid percussion kit. He has toured with Rodriguez and Johnny Clegg, and performed with Manu Dibango among others.
FREDRIK GILLE:
Fredrik Gille (Sweden) has collected and mastered a variety of percussion instruments from all over the world, with Middle Eastern drumming being his expertise – riq, frame drum, cajon. His sound is influenced by Arabic rhythms and Spanish music. He’s worked with composer Andreas Vollenweider, Algerian vocalist Karima Nayt, Swedish trip folk band Bazar Blå and Flamenco en Route.
