Who We Are
The Other Radio is a community-driven freeform internet radio station based in Cape Town, South Africa. We host an inclusive and diverse selection of people, shows and perspectives from across Africa and the world. Our work in expanding online radio in local communities has created a new era of music-aligned engagement, curation and appreciation within and around youth culture. We started broadcasting in September 2021 and have grown to an impressive number of shows spanning hundreds of hosts and guests from around the globe. Our programming matches our audience — we continue to focus on representation across all races, genders, ages and economic backgrounds, with music as the unifying language. The Other Radio strives to be a forward-thinking radio station along the lines of Dublab, Worldwide FM, Radio Raheem, NTS and Oroko Radio. Currently all of our shows are broadcasted remotely due to the unforeseen closure of our old studio (the building was abruptly sold to property developers and immediately remodelled as luxury apartments). Since then, we’ve collaborated with friends and fans to create pop-up broadcasts in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and while they were very well received, we are now ready to build a new permanent home at One Park, Gardens, (the same premises as The Other Records) with the help of our community and this fundraiser!
Our Mission
Endless Streams! URL and IRL Events! Opportunities for Co-Creation! The Other Radio documents the scene and creates stronger connections between communities! Our mission is to be a meaningful, connected music community and a platform for pioneering artists and musicians from underrepresented communities in South Africa and beyond to share their wildest perspectives in music. The Other Radio was created out of a need for community when the music industry was at its most disparate during the initial global lockdowns for COVID-19, but the enthusiasm for what we set out to do took hold and grew into a community platform that started connecting people, music and sounds in South Africa in a way that was never experienced before.
Prior to 2020, the entry-point to music communities outside of academic circles was reserved for people with access to clubs and gear. Since the start of online radio platforms like The Other Radio, Lilies Radio, Hamshack Radio and the collaborative workshop initiatives spearheaded by them, more women, LGBTQ+ and people of colour have started producing radio shows and started DJing than ever before in South Africa. We have to keep these opportunities evolving and growing to nurture equitable futures in this industry!
Why internet radio?
There are so many creative and talented people here in South Africa, and streaming video and radio allows the world to see all that we have to offer. More people are seeking underground music and community radio in order to discover new media than ever before. In an age where much of our music is decided by an algorithm, we need to give a voice to the communities (music, social and cultural) that defines who we are in an incredibly lopsided globalised world. FM stations are limited to their transmitter’s power — streaming radio is accessible from anyone who has an internet connection anywhere in the world! This is why we say "From Cape Town to URL" — the possibilities of the "you" in "URL" are incredibly vast, and with Africa being the last continent to properly join the world as a connected entity, we want to be at the forefront of that conversation!
Our Goals
- To build a new studio from which to broadcast to provide people who do not have broadcasting equipment the opportunity to host radio shows.
- To pay off the expenses we incurred to purchase our music equipment, microphones, cameras and cables.
- To sustain our monthly expenses, which include rent, accounting, streaming license fees, insurance, salaries and utilities.
- To host workshops and panels with both established music industry leaders and grassroots pioneers to teach underrepresented artists how to produce music, run record labels, host events, thrive in the music industry and connect more with marginalised society.
- To innovate our platform as an online radio station into a future-facing aspirational space utilising the latest technologies to create never before seen projects and activations.
- To create a broadcast space in Johannesburg to facilitate our residents there, and perhaps someday in other parts of Africa and the world too!
