TUT University Hackathons

About

According to World Economic Forum, Africa faces a huge digital skills gap, which is diluting economic opportunities and development. In response to this, Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FoICT) seek to align its priorities with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) strategic pillars and the National Development Plan of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) to prepare future-ready graduates and enhance employability through a series of hackathons to be organized in three provinces namely Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

A Hackathon in TUT refers to a campaign to mobilize the African talent for digital solutions addressing African problems through a 3-day creative event where like-minded programmers, UX UI (User Experience Design) designers, researchers, innovators, tech enthusiasts, ICT professionals, industry coaches and tech mentors assemble for a few days and nights with the aim of building digital solutions for social impact or educational purposes. An average of 500 students from different faculties, campuses and external universities will participate in this challenge.

Students are encouraged to solve real life challenges (presented by corporate companies, government entities and the society) around themes such as Health, Safety, Energy, Service Delivery, Climate Change, Food Security and more in groups through application of creative and digital skills to develop digital solutions. Several initiatives run throughout the year to prepare students for the Hackathon Series which includes vigorous training sessions, empowerment sessions, webinars etc.

TUT prides itself in being at the forefront of technological advancement - especially as a university of Technology. It is imperative that we continue to harvest and nurture the talents and skills of our future specialists- which are your future employees. This event is also used to expose surrounding high schools to the various opportunities within the digital skills and how entrepreneurship, the arts and engineering play a pivotal role in creating innovative digital solutions and the vast career streams in these fields.

Please find it in your heart to fund this cause to enable us to create future ready graduates and find the groundbreaking digital solutions to the challenges faced by various environments. Your participation in this exciting initiative will be highly appreciated. A total of R1 200 000 is required to successfully run various activities.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
