About
Zenzele Mthembu-Salter is a bass player and composer based in Amsterdam. Zenzele has been living in the Netherlands for the past two years, honing his craft studying jazz bass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He has been making a name for himself in the improv scene in Europe. As well as forming a South African group called ‘Sofaya’ based in Amsterdam, Zenzele has been touring around Europe with various projects, including with the likes of Kyle Shepherd.
Now returning to his home town Cape Town, Zenzele will perform a selection of his own compositions accompanied by a star studded band. He is joined by his brother Khaya Mthembu-Salter on guitar. Taking influence from the current European improv scene, the music is a blend of Contemporary Jazz and African inspired grooves, like Maskandi, Kwela, Hip-Hop. Zenzele’s roots are in African and Gospel music, but being schooled in Jazz from a young age, Zen seeks to blend his love for jazz with his African roots through his compositions.
