Stellenbosch University Choir
About
The Stellenbosch University Choir is one of the most vibrant and active choral ensembles in South Africa. Made up of students who are registered in a wide variety of academic disciplines, this choir has grown from being a gathering of a few music lovers in 1936 to the internationally acclaimed and award winning 120 strong ensemble that it is today. Students are drawn from across the country, from myriads of different backgrounds and represent the full spectrum of South Africa’s diverse population.
Under the leadership of conductor, Andre van der Merwe, the SU Choir has built a national and international reputation as a choir of exceptional excellence. Most notably the SU Choir has been ranked the top choir since 2014 by Interkultur, the organisers of the World Choir Games. This ranking is testament to the distinctive quality of music that the SU Choir delivers as well as the palpable aura of authenticity and respect that flows between all the members of the Choir in performance. Renowned for its winning balance of discipline and freedom, the SU Choir is celebrated for its rigorous technical accomplishments and for its ability to transport audiences through music that is sung from the heart.
